Feathercoin 0.8.5 is now released

We now have a stable Feathercoin 0.8.5 client for people to use. Thanks to everyone in the community who participated in testing this client. It has been a community effort to get this new release working which is excellent to see. Feathercoin is bigger than any one person and together we are strong.

Please note that you need to upgrade by January 31st as this is when the BDB lock limit rule change takes effect. This is not a hard fork but is in place to prevent such a thing happening unplanned. Remember when Bitcoin unexpectedly forked between 0.7 and 0.8. Well this fix prevents that from happening while we transition.

You can get the new client from the links below.

Windows Wallet
Mac Wallet
Linux Wallets

The source code is available on GitHub from the link below. Please note that the repo for 0.8.5 is not the same as before. The old repo has been renamed to Feathercoin-0.6.4.4 to stop anyone mistakenly downloading the old version.

GitHub Feathercoin-0.8.5

Upgrading

Before upgrading please backup your wallet by going to the File menu in the client and selecting Backup Wallet. Keep a backup somewhere off your computer too. If your hard drive fails you do not want to lose all your coins.

The first time you run the wallet it will update the blockchain to the new format. Please be patient while this process runs.

Windows
Download the installer linked above and then run it. It will uninstall your previous version if you used the installer before and then install the new client. Once installed run as normal and wait while it updates itself.

Mac
Delete the old Feathercoin-Qt application. Download the Mac client Zip file linked above, unzip the archive, go into the unzipped directory and run the Feathercoin-qt client. Once installed run as normal and wait while it updates itself.

Happy Holidays :)

Today has been a big day. Are there any specifics with updating the client? I’ve never had to update before.

I’m betting I should at the very least backup my .dat to begin with?

Question: i’m updating to the Feathercoin-QT v0.8.5 , but at the first post on this thread it says to “Delete the old Feathercoin directory” first (for Mac version). I didn’t do that since I didn’t/don’t know what the “Feathercoin directory” is. I’ve downloaded the new version and it is currently in the process of “reindexing blocks on disc.” Need I be concerned that I didn’t “delete the old feathercoin directory” before I downloaded the new version? (yes i had a previous version.)

Please advise.

Delete the Feathercoin directory means delete the old folder that Feathercoin came in. You may have deleted the folder already and moved the Feathercoin-Qt app elsewhere like the application folder. Please delete the old Feathercoin-Qt so that you do not run it by mistake.

Thanks Bushstar.
I’ve deleted both the previous version of Feather-QT and the previous .zip for the previous version of Feather-QT, after I downloaded the new version (I did open the old one and got an error message, and then trashed the old version). — Is that all I needed to delete?

That’s it. You can technically have the old version on the computer as well as the new one but best to remove the old one.

Great work guys. Very well executed.

Looks like it’s time to start on 0.8.6?

According to the change log, there’s a number of important fixes in there:
• Default block size increase for miners.
(see https://gist.github.com/gavinandresen/7670433#086-accept-into-block)

• Remove the all-outputs-must-be-greater-than-CENT-to-qualify-as-free rule for relaying

• Lower maximum size for free transaction creation
(see https://gist.github.com/gavinandresen/7670433#086-wallet)

• OSX block chain database corruption fixes

• Update leveldb to 1.13

• Use fcntl with `F_FULLSYNC` instead of fsync on OSX

• Use native Darwin memory barriers

• Replace use of mmap in leveldb for improved reliability (only on OSX)

• Fix nodes forwarding transactions with empty vins and getting banned

• Network code performance and robustness improvements

• Additional debug.log logging for diagnosis of network problems, log timestamps by default

• Fix Bitcoin-Qt startup crash when clicking dock icon on OSX

• Fix memory leaks in CKey::SetCompactSignature() and Key::SignCompact()

• Fix rare GUI crash on send

• Various small GUI, documentation and build fixes
It should be pretty straightforward given all the work you’ve done for this build.

When I hover on the check mark (when all blocks are downloaded), I no longer get the difficulty reported.

Hi Kevlar, I thought the difficulty only shows when syncing?. I have to go to Debug console to get that consistently.

I agree, I looked at the GUI in Qt. There could easily be a switch, that runs other information or a a markay of Statistics.

Personally, I think we should do the Help, Urgently, you will never known the pain you’re going to feel (in support), if we don’t.

It looks like we will have to patch ourselves from now on, so we use Github to include and test the patches. I would like to learn about the patches, even if we ACK them in to 0.9

yes they did come up.
With regards to my balance I didn’t trust myself to keep it there, so I transferred it to the btc-e wallet before I trashed the old one Feathercoin Qt.
