GPU & CPU (minerd & cgminer) Mining at the same time?
-
Q: Is it possible (and worth it) to run a CPU miner like minerd & a GPU miner like CGminer at the same time on the same machine.
I would guess the benefit would be using the GPU and CPU at the same time.
Thoughts?

I can tell you quickly about my main setup.
CPU: Intel Core i7 3930K, 6 cores with hyperthreading running at 3500 Mhz per core. I run 11 threads with poolers cpu miner and get a +75 Kh/s with it.
GPU: AMD 5770, 850Mhz core, 1250Mhz memory, 200 Kh/s at intensity 18 (unusable to work with, good for over night) and still 150Kh/s at intensity 12, which is actually useable for working (horrible for anything that is video though).
Yes my CPU is brand new and my graphics card ancient, but that extra boost is still worth a little bit something. In the end it comes down to power consumption vs. getting the job done a tiny bit faster. I don’t care about power for this setup so It’s ok, but not exactly profitable.
TL;DR: GPU mining is profitable, CPU mining possible but not profitable.

Understood,
I have access to a lot of low end computers that at least have pcie slots. I figured I could throw a decent card in them and add them to the pool I currently partake in. Right now it sounds like using the processor is just going to be a waste of energy.

For the most part yes, the kwh usage of a CPU and it’s khash rate make them pretty inviable. You will be running at a loss constantly, unless you don’t pay for your electric :P -
It works fine if you reserve one core or thread for GPU miners. BTW, an old PC with a couple of x16 PCIe slots and a decent PSU may do a nice small farm. Use your imagination.

I’ve tried to mine with CPU and GPU together, on 2 parallels sessions. I have as CPU a 3930k and a 7970 MSI lightning edition as GPU. For me, it’s a waste of energy to mine with a CPU that uses a lot of power with this low rendering, if you compare with the GPU.
My 7970 is like 10 times faster than my CPU, even if I’ve underclocked it because with the original clock, the temperature is too high :/ -

Yup, this exactly. I have an overclocked 3930k (4.5GHz with HT stable) and I really can’t bring myself to leave it mining. Not only would it force up my system wattage, it’ll also increase my electricity bill a considerable amount. xD -

[/quote]i mine both on my CPU (minerd) and GPU (cgminer), however be aware that if you use all the cores/threads of cpu you might get a reduction in cgminer perfomance.
for instance when i ran 100% cpu power on minerd my rigs went down from producing total of 6000khash to about 5000khash.
I fixed this by using only 6 of 8 threads (i7) and 2 of 3 cores in my AMD cpu. This way i only use about 70-80% off total cpu usage, leaving some for cgminer to performe optimal.
