As your Projects/Community Guy.. What do you need from me?

I think Mt.Gox has left a nasty taste in many new (to cryptocoin) users/investors and is possibly not the best exchange to use as a “poster boy”.Vircurex and BTC-e have both had their issues but are still seen as reliable enough to trade on.
Could we recommend a spread of exchanges without favouring any one, and maybe allow (moderated) reviews of each?
Congrats, look forward to you leading that project. :) Feel free to take it any direction you feel is best.
Ok, thanks for the vote of confidence, I think…
I’ll have a think about the best format and PM you later with some ideas.

Hi guys,
I’m afraid this post is a little longer than good for a forum, but I thought to just share a couple of things I noticed and thought about. Please note that this is not meant to be critical; I just want to share some things.
I. First of all, the official website

the version number of the official software is not shown. As a consequence, a user cannot see easily whether he runs the most recent version of the software. I suggest to mention the latest software version number

the windows package of the software needs to be unzipped into a folder by the user. For the average user, this is already too difficult. A Windows installer would be a welcome addition

for the techies, some information on the program’s default location (I am thinking about Windows again) in XP and Win7/8 including the default location of the wallet.dat would be helpful as part of the/a FAQ

I noticed that the website does not play along very nice with mobile devices. Something that should be fixed in the future if we look at the continuous trend to mobile devices
II. The coin itself

I think it is important to realise that - in essence - the value of any crypto currency is based on the network

a network requires users, but users will only feel confident to use the network if they consider it a safe and reliable network

therefore, it is a fair assumption that a stable (or orderly increasing) amount of mining power is quint essential for every coin’s early days. Leaving out all other relevant aspects of a coin, the mining is what I consider the most important right now and perhaps up to one year from now. The rest follows automatically (see further details of this argumentation below)

thus: users come later although it is not unwise to invest in this aspect as soon as possible

in the early days, confidence in and happiness about the coin rely heavily on reliance on the community, support and development in general; exactly the things Feathercoin does right from the start 8)

we can benefit from all cross over effects of the open source character of crypto currencies and give back any improvements made as part of the Feathercoin project. One massive and unstoppable world dominating force with zillion brilliant minds participating. It’s mind blowing
III. Long term view

I consider weaknesses of the basic BTC approach (as duplicated by most altcoins including FTC): the confirmation time, (lack of) ease of use, the increasing size of the block chain and issues with difficulty adjustments

strengths of Feathercoin (1): more coins will be available than BTC and LTC. Although this is only a semantic point that does not hold up to pure logic, I think it will provide a better value comparison in the heads of people (compared to fiat) than the more extreme comparisons with crypto coins that have a much lower total amount of coins. At some point, I think people will be reluctant to buy a fraction of a BTC because its value would be $10,000 per coin. Its psychological, but people are first and foremost emotional beings and everything but rational

strengths of Feathercoin (2): crypto currecies are still in their infancy. Starting now with Feathercoin you will still be an early adopter

strengths of Feathercoin (3): no logic here, but hey, look at the website and the forum and all the happy people (free from scammers) => Feathercoin is hip and trendy
In addition to the concept of value. Maybe I am seeing things wrong here, but the recent rise of numerous altcoins and the continuous interest in every new coin got me thinking. Imagine a large city without a decent phone network. If a few geeks connect merely 100 phones to each other across town with wires running over the roofs, through the sewer system or by whatever means possible, they establish a network. Its very tiny, its very rudimentary, but its a network. The simple fact that 100 locations are available across town to establish a connection and communicatie, give this network value.
I have a similar mental model of crypto currencies: the mere fact that people are mining - for instance - FC2, give it value. Yes, also FC2 is a perfectly functioning protocol or network usable for everyone. The software is there, miners are active so payments can be processed and any two people that connect to that network can start making payments to each other. From that perspective, I don’t loath the dozens altcoins anymore, but see it for what it is: mini-networks that - as long as there are sufficient miners - have that tiny value just like that 100 phones network.
I think Feathercoin is fully in this beginner stage and will probably remain in that stage for a while. That’s nothing to worry about but my focus is therefore fully aimed on this network. I sincerely believe that as long as mining FTC remains in fashion, the rest will follow. I do not want to compare Feathercoin to other coins (I made myself a promise not to do so ever on this board) but if Feathercoins remain to be mined, we have that first start of value being that functioning network. We’ve seen it with other altcoins that slowly but surely gain in terms of mining participation (and adoption, albeit slowly). Of course, Feathercoin starts exceptionally well with (as I understand) a beautiful Android client, an intelligent and dedicated community, a proper website/design and excellent PR. This - together with achieving a stable mining participation - will make Feathercoin strong (stronger than other altoins in my perception).
From my perspective, we are not promoting a coin, but a movement. Again, in this phase, I think the focus should be on stable mining participation and refining the software (something that other altcoins lack). If we achieve this continuous attention of miners for this coin, broader adoption will follow slowly but surely, measured in years. My personal goal is to contribute to this project although I am (unfortunately) not a software developer, website genius or graphics designer, none of that.
That does not matter: my contribution could consist of anything. I want to trigger a positive attitude on this forum and motivate everyone to contribute in any way they can (mining, just buying FTC, writing stuff, promoting it etc).
I thank the developers of Feathercoin for what they have achieved already in such short period of time and look forward to an interesting 2 years to come.

Great post ^ covered a lot of areas! And do you actually think that fc2 will get anywhere?

@ feather, I am not going to answer them all but all very valid points! Anyway jus a brief reply…
The website works fine on my phone? Nexus 4? Not sure of other devices though but from a web development POV nion all sites work on modern phones/tablets due to true browser support, although granted some, better than others…What I have noticed with this site is that every page opens zoomed, maybe this can be fixed via viewport settings, either way a quick double tap on the screen brings you back to full screen page fitment… or are you seeing differently?
Yes an installer would be good idea, I actually have fully licensed software capable of doing this and would be willing to do this for the community, providing bush agrees that is, I’ll pose the question to him when he’s not as busy.
Like I said just a brief reply :D
If I find anything else to reply about I’ll add in due course, but like I said all valid points! 8)

I plan to spend some time on this response when I get home later tonight, glad you spent the time to really break it down.

I agree with:
Version - put that in bold and rainbow colors and until people can recite the numbers do not let them go any further.I disagree with:
If you can’t use zip and folder, you probably click everything you see and download eveything that pops up. Wait a while.So-so:
Mobile website would be nice, but active members make it valuable.I don’t even:
FC2 is worthless without a community. Alts are not Bitcoin lite. Alts are the things Bitcoiners are too busy counting the value of their bitdust to do. -
When I drop my next few proposals, you may dub me Sir Decoupling Architect, which sounds like a guy who goes around breaking up romances but just the same, I am on a path.Same path I tried to go on with Litecoin, but you can’t do amazing crap without an amazing community
This community is absolutely mind blowing. And I have been in contact with two others of similar awesomeness. I’ll let you guess which.

Hi guys,I’m afraid this post is a little longer …
Nice read, i like the comparison with that ‘little phone network’.
I see you can contribute to the community by writing and promoting it, you seem good at it. You even made me more enthusiastic then i already was.

Thanks for the replies.
To follow up on the remarks on mobile access to the website, I post some shots. It will probably be clear what my remarks were aimed at. Device is a Desire HD, browers is standard Android Webkit on Android 4.2.2 (hail Randomblame at XDA…).
The text in the main banner is cut off, no matter if I resize. It is cut off both in portrait as landscape mode.
In portrait mode, buttons overlap, both zoomed in and out. In landscape, this problem does not seem to be present.
