Hello from Texas

Hello All…
I am brand new to mining- been researching crypto for a couple of months and just ordered rig components last week. I hope to be up and running in a couple of weeks. I originally thought I would try LTC but after a lot of looking I think FTC may make more sense in the long run. Looks like you have a great community going- I am sure I will need some advice once I get the rig online- so thanks in advance! :) -
Welcome Phil. What kind of rig are you putting together?

Like most people arriving late to this game, I had just been on the crypto fringe for the last 6 months or so, hearing a lot about BTC, but not really aware of mining or how this currency works. Once I became intrigued with the possibility of LTC at $17 on BTC-e, literally 2 days later it jumped to the high $30s and I was ready to jump in. Then I learned that the difficulty for LTC remained fairly low for many months and then almost doubled from Nov to Dec., and with the number of people coming onboard it looks to increase even more very quickly. I don’t know how that will affect FTC, but from researching the forums, online community, etc. it looks like this should be a great place to get started. I realize this is all speculative- but when looked at as a whole, I am convinced digital currencies are a solid idea for the long term future.
I could not find any 7950s anywhere. I researched about 3 different rig build specs online, but once I started searching for everything I soon realized there are many people jumping into this at the same time. Just about every single element I was searching for was probably 30-40% more expensive as compared to the online spec lists, and in some cases even out of stock. I ended up ordering (2) Vision Tek Radeon R9 280xs along with an ASRock 970 EXTREME4 MOB and a EVGA SuperNova 1300 PSU. I am planning on just using the plastic milk crate setup for now. Hopefully I can get this thing together and working once everything arrives and then add 1 or 2 additional cards in a few weeks. I am a video editor with an edit suite at home that currently supports 2 Avid PC edit systems, so I am a little anxious regarding how much noise and heat this additional rig is going to add to my room. I do have an extra back bedroom since my son is away at college, but currently don’t have internet wiring back there- so I may need to spring for the cost to get that wired. I am not really computer tech savvy, so hopefully getting the rig up, software loaded and configured will be achievable. I would love to get this up and churning before Christmas!

Hello Phil,
I too just got started, I’m in Houston, I have one R9 270x so I started with that before I invest anything more. I’m getting about 330 Khash, thought I’d get about 450 but guess not. It would be interesting to see what you get out of your 2 x R9 280x, I was thinking of a 3 x 280 rig. -
I also use a more inefficient rig, with Radeon 6770 (120kHash) Radeon 6950, (not clockable 140KHash), and a Radeon 6990 (300kHash).
It was fun, but technically stressful to set them up. I made it harder using Linux. I have made a few coins that can currently pay the electric and buy the rig. Not enough to want to sell yet tho’, I still buying.

[/quote]Mind if I ask why the 6950 is so low hash wise? My current rig uses a few stock 6870s netting 320Kh/s average. My 6950 was netting 430Kh/s before it was bartered to a friend that wanted to stretch his upgrade path, unlocking the card and crossfiring it with his 6990. We share the opinion it’s generally a good idea to skip generations, so he’s waiting for Vesuvius to launch. Either way, bone stock shouldn’t both the 6950 and the 6990 have higher hash rates?
