Older board new GPU question
-
I have spent weeks trying to find my own answer, now I realize that I am lost and ask for help. Back in 2007 or so built a gamer rig an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe board with Athlon X2 5200 Brisbane CPU dual 8800 GTS cards 16 GB of RAM until I later installed a SSD . I understand on newer boards that PCI Express x16 has changed over the years to 3.0 … So on my old school board would be a 1.0 PCI express x 16 and the new boards 3.0 … GPU’s are supposed to be backwards compatible according to their standards, like USB 3.0 to 1.0.
So my long drawn out question would be this…
Can I slap a XFX RADEON R9 290 947MHz 4GB in this thing and have it mine FTC productively ??? Would the transfer rate of my board cause a huge problem ? To my limited understanding I would see a +15% drop in graphics performance, but would that affect mining performance, and in your opinion be a reason to scrap a perfectly good board and upgrade?
I am currently running a AMD A10-5800K APU at 43 Kh/s mining 1+ FTC per day @ 50 watts and would like to step it a bit and revive a rig that is just gathering dust and not being used.
Happy New Year To Everyone.
Best Regards,
Don -
My guess is no. But that is a guess… literally. Wait for someone who knows more about this to comment…
My understanding is that mining performance is mostly to do with VRAM Bandwidth… My R9 270 is 256 bit apparently. Generally the R9 290’s have a bus width of 512 bit I’ve been told.
But yeah. Wait and see what the more experienced miners have to say. I’m only running on my very limited knowledge.

PCI-e speed doesn’t matter, alot miners are even using x1 slots with an x1 - x16 riser to let the GPU mine.

It’s wrong that you’re under 25 rep…

Great question, should have been asked on the Mining board so more members would have seen the answer…

Thanks for the help. Very much appreciated. For me that is a huge amount of money to throw out there without at least asking first, and then have to upgrade a board after the fact.

Sorry about that, figured that as a new member I had to start in this forum. If you think it should be moved please do so. -
Hey that’s ok.
I made my first topic in the newbies section then never created a new one in there after that. Wasn’t sure if I was limited to the section but it seems it’s just so every member here at least introduces themselves before moving on to the rest of the forum.

Thanks for the support and encouragement. Will try and post in the correct forum from now on, but may need help every so often…
