A couple of Newbie question regarding PCI-e riser cables and monitor need
-
(edit) Sorry, just realized this is probably in the wrong forum category- but don’t see a way to move it. I thought this “newbie” section was for newbie issues… but perhaps I should have put this in “mining”
I am still in the process of receiving delivery on all my ordered rig elements, but continuing to search through this forum to ensure I am getting what I need. I will be using an ASRock 970 EXTREME4 MB, and originally ordered (2) R9 280x cards- however I just changed plans and ordered an additional card for a total of (3). I understand now after finding info on this forum regarding the advice to use powered, rather than un-powered PCI-e risers, however, I am not clear on the following: For my 3 card rig, do I need (3) 16x16 riser cables, or (1) 1x16 riser and then (2) 16x16 risers? (or does that even matter?) I am just not clear on the available slots, and I see both of these types listed when I research a few rig spec builds online. My other question is: will I need an additional monitor? Do most of you monitor/tweak your cards/mining status on a separate computer, or do you use a monitor connected to your mining rig in order to do that ? Thanks in advance for these basic questions!

Sorry I am not able to help with your tech questions … but welcome to the community :D

As for a separate monitor:
When I was running prime(number)-searching software on various PCs I would initially use an old small monitor to get things running, then install TeamViewer for remote access (even from my iPad).
As the GPU usage will probably be making screen refreshing crawl when mining, I suspect you will need to stop the miner, make any changes, then restart the miner to allow for prompt responses to mouse clicks etc.
TeamViewer is very simple to install and use but I did find it kept locking me out of a Ubuntu box.
