Because the guide was a basic summation, I didn’t go into detail of how to create multiple droplets etc. it’s for learning purposes. I spend most of my time on my blog, not on forums. I do not have to share any of my experiences with anyone if this is the harassment I am going to get for trying to contribute to a community and simply give users a different approach to mining when they cannot afford to do so.
So what do you need wrapper? My name, my phone number, my place of employment and my facebook profile? I am not looking to be felt as “straight” in your eyes, I am simply educating people. What do people do when they’re new and uneducated, they come to the newbie area looking for help and guidance. So yes I posted in uh, the newbies area. Forgive me as I didn’t know I was obligated to post elsewhere. If I knew where to post an offtopic newbie informational guide, I would have posted it elsewhere.
Not to mention you removed one number from my link to my blog to show page now found, then further more posted your own DigitalOcean referral link in my post later on. Talk about shady, and nothing but pure greed on your behalf. This is not something that should be done in this community regardless. Especially someone that is “Staff.”

Protecting the members from what exactly, an investment blog?
You can find similar posts to this on Bitcointalk and various other forums, all I did was simply add a visual guide to it all.

Changing peoples posts and basically assuming they’re doing harm by posting a blog, not so much a friendly environment. Especially after you basically call them untrustworthy for being a new member here.

You slandered my be saying saying not to download PuTTY, when in fact it is a secure program and reputable for installing on Ubuntu servers and mentioned in many Bitcointalk forum posts. By saying you don’t trust me, or as you so put it “straight.” Then attacked me for posting in a newbie area. I have less than 15 posts on this forum, I consider that to be newbie in its entirety.

I posted a link to my blog, my personal website. You altered this link regardless of being fit in the guidelines and permissible. I was not advertising any other services, I was educating people on ways to mine without the costly overhead of equipment. I write about investing. Furthermore, you directly posted your Digital Ocean referral link on my thread, when you intentionally altered my original post because of it. Is this not direct advertising?

Um. Okay, here goes.
I have [i]unlimited[/i] access to empty prepaid cards. That’s not an exaggeration, I don’t want to explain how that’s the case, I simply do.
When you set up one of these massive instances, though, even before you use the entirety of your $10 credit, DigitalOcean will contact the email account associated with it and go “excuse meh wtf r u doin” and then ask for some verification info against the card. Once they even called me.
Here’s my take, though. You’re essentially playing whack-a-mole wherein you’re the mole. Ethically, I’d have no beef doing this to, say, Microsoft or Oracle or any other number of the Fortune 500 companies that want to bleed some money out of people by dipping their toes into a market in order to make competition suffer through underpricing of services… but I mean, this is [i]DigitalOcean[/i]. They’ve got a lot of horsepower, but they’re not some massive machine to rage against, they’re pretty much end users like you and I. They’ve built a great service and they reluctantly agree to people using their equipment in this manner if only because they don’t believe in being tyrants.
I just don’t feel like taking advantage of a credit program they intend for you to use [i]once[/i]. “I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.” and all that.

Since many people view this forum by looking at Unread Posts the categories lose their meaning and I believe the need to maintain order is not as important as helping new people gain better understanding.
As staff we are here to give others everything they need to do their jobs, fulfil their roles and help one another. By relentlessly enforcing rules we create more work for ourselves and forget the spirit the rules in the first place, guides that help us reach our goals.
So I don’t have a problem with this post being here.

That’s the main reason why I limited the entirety to the $10 promo. If a user prefers to continue buying into it, that is their choice. Many users spend hundreds on ebay to rent hashing power for no return on their investment at all other than a few mBTC. This is basically the same concept but the users have the ability to control the minimal power.
Users can do the same concept here. I didn’t post the guide to abuse it, I posted it to simply educate people on alternatives rather than buying expensive equipment. Which is why I left out the fact of using giftcards as I don’t want users to abuse their service, but still be able to take advantage of the $10 promotion they are offering.

I applaud the desire to help out, although the best place would have been in the Support >> Guides area ;)
However, I do have issues with the accuracy of the numbers, as I pointed out. I still do not believe, based on my experience of DigitalOcean droplets, that even the largest one would generate 600KH/s.
However, I will test it tomorrow and report back. If I am wrong I will of course apologise, but if I am right, can we work on a correct guide to go in the Guides board?

Use the promo and create a droplet on the 16 GB / 8 CPUS. Run 8 threads. Each one will be between 80 - 100 KH/s each.

I’ve tested the procedure as provided by ibitcoinblog using my own Digital Ocean account rather than the freebie code, with the single difference being that I chose to mine a Scrypt coin rather than Quark Coin.
His procedures are correct and do work as stated, and the only comment I have on the technical accuracy of the guide is that sudo is not required in all the commands because Digital Ocean droplets are created with only the root user by default.
Seen as purely a tutorial on setting up CPU mining on a Linux VPS, it works absolutely.

The hashrates quoted do not apply to Scrypt coins, including Feathercoin.
The largest droplet available from Digital Ocean is 16GB RAM and 8 CPU cores, which I used.

root@Mine-Test:~/cpuminer#[/code]On a node costing approximately $5.16 per day to run, it would earn approximately $0.29 in FTC if FTC is mined directly. This means it is absolutely uneconomic to use this method to mine if not losing handfuls of money is an objective.
I understand that with $10 of free VPS use, you may able to mine around 1.6 FTC without it costing anything, and as a learning experience it may be worth more to some. However, creating multiple accounts to make use of the same freebie code is almost certainly against DO’s terms and conditions, and absolutely against the spirit of the service they offer, and should not be condoned.
Digital Ocean is a solid, reliable and fair VPS provider, and abusing their offers in this manner risks the service they provide to other users.
Having said that, I’m happy to have the guide added to the Support >> Guides forums, as it is technically correct, as long as the hashrates are adjusted for Scrypt values given that this is an FTC forum.
