Warning To Newbies Building A Rig For The First Time:
-
There’s a ton of information in the mining forum that you can follow along, search and sift through, but something that does need to be mentioned is this: you need to be weary that if someone has a piece of software out there that they’re trying to sell you on using. If it can compromise you or your resources or not.
For example, there’s an operating system out there that promises a thin, slick way for you to run your miners, but…

The creator slipped in a cron job that stops mining whatever you’re mining at 3 o’clock every day and for 15 minutes mines for him. And no telling what other nastiness may be in there without being upfront.
While it’s always recommended that you search around, definitely don’t hesitate to ask any questions before you implement something. Ounce of possible annoyance is worth a pound of protection when it comes to the Feathercoin network and the people that make it up, and those things come first here.
As you were.
It’s called a “Developers Fee”. ;)
I’m not hip to the topic at hand, but this is not out of the ordinary and if you mine on ypool you’re quite familiar w/it. Perhaps this lad didn’t mention his fee up front (shame on him), but it is not uncommon today and is accepted as normal (if not necessary to promote further development) in some circles.
I’m cool with a pool doing it since it’s right there in the settings as you configure. But when other aspects look to take their cut, where does it stop? Your OS wants a cut, your mining software wants a cut, maybe a tool for tweaking settings that is ultimately useless but now running on your machine anyway wants it’s cut. I just don’t want it normalized for a new generation of people. But yeah, the failure to disclose ahead of time is what sunk him; the fear that without full accountability and disclosure of what else may be lurking in there.

I just got all my rig parts today and created a monster. Although, an ill one - 6 GPUs, all with dummy plugs, except one which has dvi-vga adapter and vgo monitor on it. Still, Windows (7, Ultimate, 64bit) just doesn’t want to show anything on screen. It did show when I had installed only one GPU, even with two (but then I had to change the monitor cable to other GPU). Now it’s just stuck. Any ideas? Therefore I downloaded SMOS today, installed it on USB drive…and now I find out about this. Hm, grateful for efforts that guy made, but no thanks, that’s not a way to do it.
I’m actually having a similar issue but it has to do with how I’m installing and I won’t be much help because I’m using Lubuntu. Basically pushing graphics through but it’s just a black screen. Since I have zero luck getting OS installs working on flash drives, I’m going to just bite the bullet and walk to Wal-Mart tonight and hope they have that portable USB DVD drive in their clearance section.
Depending on the board and just making sure that there’s nothing wonky with integrated graphics usurping your cards or something like that. Best bet is to ask down in mining; the team has seen a little of everything for sure.
Funny how this sort of stuff happens when you repeat the process but the first time it was done it was smooth sailing. But like my boss says: “if it was easy then everyone would do it”.

I was about to turn my back on Windows and start my Linux adventure with BAMT, then I heard that CG Watcher and CG Remote got bought out by a development company and they are going hard with features…
That’s going to be king if you have multiple rigs…
