Bootstrap.dat for Feathercoin?
-
I just reinstalled the client because I formatted my computer (saved my wallet of course ;)) and wow … downloading the initial blockchain info takes a long time. What would it take to make a bootstrap.dat available for new users? I’ve learned that there are workarounds from http://forum.feathercoin.com/index.php/topic,4885.msg43883.html#msg43883 but thinking with an eye to the future, it would be great to include downloading the most recent bootstrap as part of the install process to make it nicer for new users that don’t have the knowledge or the access to those use those workarounds.
I say this not as a code savvy developer but as an end user. I realize what I’m saying could very well be incredibly difficult to implement but I thought I’d at least start a conversation about it :)

- 1, having just updated the client on my server it took forever to fetch the chain again :-\
My question is, is the bootstrap not just a large section of the chain, in which case would it not take the same amount of time to fetch anyway? Providing a 1 gig file to download somewhere is bound to cost in bandwidth, whereas I get the impression the client downloads it as peer2peer - or am I mistaken?
When I did the process with Litecoin, it was considerably faster to download the file directly than it was for the p2p way to happen.

One reason I jumped on ftc early on was that the btc blockchain was so large that I just killed it. Even litecoin takes forever. I’d like for ftc to have that size blockchain, but it seems that something must be done so that such an upfront hit is not required.
(semi-related) I don’t ever see any discussions about how unfeasible it is for everyone to be throwing around this ever grown file, but it seems it could become an achilles heal for p2p CCs unless there’s an easier way to decentralize the blockchain itself.
