Need help choosing hardware

Hi @Miner196
if you started at www.feathercoin.com you’ll see it says:
- Current Gen ASIC resistant
This means it is not mineable with ASICs at this time.
The only thing you can mine Feathercoin with is a CPU or GPU.The reason for this is to keep mining fair, distributed and decentralised.
Unlike Bitcoin, which at the moment, you can only buy mining hardware from very few manufactures for thousands of dollars and “most” bitcoin mining takes place in China where electricity/power is cheap.
Feathercoin you can mine with your desktop computer if you wanted and almost every computer shop sells graphics cards ;-)

Is CPU mining still feasible or GPU is a must? Thanks!

Hello Miner196,
welcome to the forum
Good you ask for advice here, as Feathercoins currently can’t be mined with Asics. It uses the Neoscrypt algorithm now and not Scrypt anymore. :D
There are no known Asics supporting the Neoscrypt algorithm.
So if you want to mine Feathercoins, go for one or more GPU, either AMD or NVIDIA and calculate your cost based on that hardware.

At current difficulty it is only just feasible to CPU mine, maybe as a test or learn how to do it. The trouble is you will need a pool and many won’t pay out if your hash rate is too low per day.

After mining for 4 days on P2pool @ ~6 kH/s, I havn’t got a single share. I watched someone mining at ~50 kH/s and I think they’ve got maybe a couple of shares in the same period (worth something like $0.02) Pity. ;(
At least, I know now that Feathercoin CPU mining is not feasible.
-
It is doable, please check give-me-coins.com mining pool, I CPU mine FTC there and I get about 1FTC per day.
-
It needs some tuning of parameter, and you are right, with 6 khash it takes a long time to get some payouts. 6kHash sound like a single cpu core on a Laptop to me.
Desktop quad core CPU may get up t 80-100 khash an then CPU mining makes more sense. then.Still when I mined last on p2pool with also ~ 5-6 khash , I got ~ 0.8 - 1 FTC per day.
Something seems to wrong. Does your miner say, that is got shares accepted, or are they rejected? You also can estimate your earnings with a simple formula:
<total network hash rate> / <your hash rate> * 1 minute
Totay that would be 1523648225/6000*1 = 253941 Minutes or 176.348 Days to find a block and earn 40 FTC.
This equals to 0.2268 FTC per day long term average.Fact is, that GPU mining give much better results and is more effective in terms of power consumption per hash.

What mining software did you use to CPU mine?

I used cpuminer-neoscrypt on Intel Core2 Duo running Debian 9.1. My power consumption was running around 130W, making it awfully inefficient, even if I could muster 1 FTC per day as @looarn mentioned.
My understanding is that by the nature of p2pool’s PPLNS payout scheme, 6 kH/s is well below the noise level at current difficulty, thus yielding zilch shares.
I’ve switched to GPU mining since then, getting ~500 kH/s with much better results - ~16 coins per day. Still, it’s not profitable at the current price level due to high electricity cost in my area.

i am very much in the same boat, except your card is doing much better than mine! dual xeons and a 780 make for a high electric bill, but guess its better than folding for free! new rig will do better i hope :)
