Good Graphics Cards

Yes - nVidia are out. Without getting too technical it’s the way the 2 manufactures architecture works (all to do with integers calculations etc). AMD is far better for Mining (personally though i’m an nVidia fanboy for gaming :-[ )
As for cards - no personal experience with the lower end cards but i’ve heard good things of the 7850’s.

If you have a budget under $200 get an AMD HD 7850 or a 7870 without a reference cooler. You will also want to get one that is voltage unlocked so you can adjust it to lower power consumption. What do you have for a power supply on the machine you are going to install this on?

I’m not sure what kind of power supply is in my workstation. It’s back home and I won’t be there for another week or two. I’m just trying to figure out what card I need before I get started, although I’ll probably do some CPU mining on my laptop overnight just for fun.

(ATI 4850)According to this, https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Mining-hardware-comparison, it runs at about 100kh/s if I understand right. Can someone verify that I read the numbers right? :)

That is correct, a 4850 will give you around 100-120kh/s.

At the current difficulty 100khs will get you ~4 ftc per day if pool mining. By the time you’ve paid for electricity you’ll be lucky to break even I’m afraid. On the other hand, difficulty is dropping at the moment and you may have free leccy. ;)

It’s a pain in the ass to set up HD4xx0 hardware for scrypt mining under Windows. Old reaper (v12) supported them, new one (v13) doesn’t. Someone needs to update the OpenCL kernel. When it comes to cgminer, it hangs up on startup in scrypt mode, though SHA-256 mining works fine. Other scrypt miners are also full of trouble.
If you don’t want to use Linux and can’t set up them for scrypt mining under Windows, you can still mine bitcoins and exchange them for feathercoins.

How/why is the difficulty adjusted? Is there an article I can read about that? I’m a hobby developer so technical articles don’t scare me.

I have another question, ghostlander, now that I think about it. Putting Linux on the computer with the 4850 won’t be a problem for me - but where do I get the linux drivers for it? Is it likely to be supported in Ubuntu?
If it’s easier to setup in Linux than in Windows, would you mind explaining some of the steps I’ll need to take in more detail? Anything you come up with I’ll add to the [url=http://feathercoin.wikispaces.com/]unofficial wiki[/url] for my own reference and anyone else using a 4XX0 ATI card.

[/quote]One of my 5770’s just keeps going and going. runs hotter than I would like being a single slot card, but gives around 150-200KH with some tuning and has been running 24/7 for many moons now.

That’s basically an extension cable for the graphics card. You’d connect it to the bottom of the graphics card and the PCI-E slot on the motherboard.

That’s to provide power for the PCI-E pins on the graphics card. The PCI-E slot on the motherboard provides limited power to GPUs. Some motherboards can burn out if too much current is drawn through the PCI-E slots. So some people use powered risers in order to avoid those issues.

That’s a molex adapter. Plugging a molex cable directly from the PSU into that will provide it power.
