Updating the local wallet client
-
Hi guys,
I am really new to the cryptocurrency idea but I’m really excited about it. I understand that the client is important because it contains the keys to your wallet. Where does the mac and windows client store the data? If I update the software, does it generate a new wallet? Should I just replace the app or .exe file? I’m hoping not to do something stupid and lose coins.

Hi there hectorlee, if you’d like to backup your wallet simply open Feathercoin-qt, press File and hit Backup wallet.
Your default wallet is saved into %appdata%/Feathercoin so you risk nothing removed or replacing ANY of the files inside of the Feathercoin archive. ^^

As an example.Edit: Your Wallet Backup (from File->Backup Wallet) and wallet.dat inside %appdata% are one and the same.

So I have to manually back it up all the time? I was thinking of linking the file into dropbox or something so that it automatically backs up for me all the time.

You can do that too, just symlink the file from %appdata% to your dropbox.Be warned though, DropBox claim to have rights over any file stored with them, so whilst it’s a live backup of the file and it’s secured to ‘your’ DropBox account you’re technically still sharing the file with themselves.

Thanks. I just don’t trust it without an automatic backup.

I’d also suggest encrypting it if you’re going to store it on dropbox.

Exactly as I do, the only problem then is it is no longer a ‘live’ backup… Well, unless store a small truecrypt archive in dropbox, which is mounted as a drive, and then has the wallet symlinked from %appdata% to the truecrypt drive.
