Asus router dead
-
Ok so i was bored earlier as SR has closed down I’ve been a little short of coke and hookers (jk jk) so i fired up a few radios and was tuning around heard some guy on 27mhz usb who’s audio sounded shit so i thought i would tell him… anyway long story short my keying up the radio has blown my router!! no power or anything :( luckily being a nerd I have backup routers aswell as backup connections but i want my Asus nt16 back!!
Any ideas ?
Psu is fine, cant reset etc… just no lighting up at all. I doubt anyone has come across this before but i figured it was worth an ask… off to try and trace through the entire board to probably find its the cpu that’s blown, yay. -
Ok so the magic smoke has been released from what seems to be the CAT7581ca (slightly obscured by the burn but I’m pretty sure it’s that) PWM controller IC, it’s an soic8 package which seems to be replaceable with an RT9214… soooo does anyone have one I can beg, borrow or steal ? I’ve ordered some from HK but couldn’t find any locally (England) so could be waiting weeks if not months.
Cheers -
Or… knows of any other devices that have these in? I have been through alot of my old motherboards cable modems, routers etc etc without luck.

As no-one else has replied to this so I thought I would.
I don’t know anything about router internals (or to be fair electronics in general) but this thread seemed a bit lonely.Hope you get it fixed… although would it not be cheaper to buy a new one.

Visit your local flea market and pick up a WRT-54G router for 10 dollars. Look for a version 4 or lower. They are nice routers based on the broadcom chip set and the older ones can be flashed easily with Tomato or dd-wrt.

Cheers for the replies guys :)
A new router the same is around £65 but I would feel a failure if I didn’t at least try and fix it before buying a new 1!
I have some of the DC/DC PWM chips coming from HK so in a month or so I will know if I can fix it or not :)
I have backups but I do like this router! I better watch how much power I TX in the future and maybe upgrade my coax too.
I think I have some form of OCD in this area… i cannot let something die, I will spend hours debugging a child’s £5 toy just because I don’t like being beaten lol
The greatest feeling I ever got (nerd wise ;) ) was when i fixed my £500 mixer by replacing 1 capacitor and it still works to this day -
I have found these helpful in the past when trying to source components not available at the likes of RS etc…

[/quote]I actually found them through an eBay sellers account, and I only purchased 5x components at the time (granted that was over a year ago)…Maybe just give them a shout and see you never know?

I often find with stuff like that, if you only want one they’ll just post it out to you FOC.
