Now and again we get people complain about our forum signup process. We have changed it a few times but I think we can really try and nail this once and for all and make the whole thing a lot more user friendly and smooth.

      Problems:

It’s not obvious you need to post in the newbies section if you haven’t used this kind of forum before

The Chatbox often gets used for as Support request for this when nobody is there

When a user goes in to the main forum to try and post for first time all they get is an absence of buttons they don’t get told what they are doing wrong

The Captchas are annoying as hell
I suggest:

Put a notice on the Chatbox saying this is not an area for support, please go to support forum

The support forum is available to first time users (for merchants etc who just want to question answered

The help page tells people they have to post in the newbies sections first

The signup page and confirmation email both tell people they will need to post in newbies section

The link from the confirmation email takes people to the newbies section with big letters telling them to say hi and why they have to do it.
Citizens of Feathercoin, your thoughts please.

Can the Newbie forum and Support forum be right at the top for those who haven’t posted yet?
Also put both in a shade of blue, with blinking arrows and explosions.
Make a sticky: To gain access to the rest of the forum, post first.
Integrate Chatbox in the side with minimize option.
Add timestamps to Chatbox posts so people can tell if it’s been a while since people have posted.

If you hover your mouse over user name, then you will see timestamp ;)

I agree with all you posted . Some of my friends can not receive e-mail confirmation, Sometimes you can not add registration On local.feathercoin.com. We should write in the e-mail “You must post here at least once before posting to any other section of the forum.”

We know it, but a first time user doesn’t.

Another suggestion: is it possible to add a line below the chatbox telling the number of people in chat, based on chat activities during the last 15 minutes?

@ChrisJ: I agree with all of your suggestions

It’s a piece of software, hide the forums new users can’t access completely or gray them out.

Personally I like the “hide” method, makes participation more like a game and you unlock new levels.

                  Encouraging participation in itself.

At some point could even make lounges for Rep levels.

                  100 Club, 1000 Club, and beyond. :D
