Newb about to invest in a mining rig
-
Hi all, great forum you have here. I have a couple of newbie questions and hope you can help…
I am looking to invest in a mining rig to mine Feathercoin. I am happy to invest around £1300-£1800 give or take. I am doing this primarily as a way to make a profit, and I do believe the medium/long terms trends for Feathercoin value are good.
For the GPU, I have looking at buying two or three MSI HD 7990 AMD Radeon cards. They are about £400 each but Price to khash ratios seem to be fairly consistent across all high end cards (judging by https://litecoin.info/Mining_Hardware_Comparison).
Are these cards a good bet for mining?
is £400 a good price for them?
What are their shortfalls against other cards?
Would you recommend any alternatives?
Should I be worried about script ASIC mining? (http://forum.feathercoin.com/index.php/topic,5037.0.html)Your advice is much appreciated…

Welcome Check1, All the information you need is in the mining section.
I myself use 7950’s, I get 660Khash from each card(overclocked) and the cards cost me about 300 euro but there a year old now, I see secondhand cards going for 200 euro, but before xmas price on cards(as with everything else) the price goes up.
As for your other worries, gamers still need cards so at less you can resell them if asics come along or mining with gpu’s becomes unprofitable.

Careful with 7990s.
Mine throttles down. I get half the performance I should get.

Thanks both for the useful advice.
Im not sure Zerodrama your 7990s are doing that and as I’m a bit of a newb it’s probably best I take the more tried and tested option of the 7950s. I was originally looking at the 7990s because they were some of the only ones I could find in stock.
I have found some 7950s on Ebay. They are PowerColour. About £180 each. Seems like a good price so are they up to standard? I’m ready to push the button on buying four of them…

I can only speak for the 7950PCS+ from that same brand. They’re ok. The voltage seems locked though @ 1.09v so the max I reach with OC is 620kh/s per card.
Since I dont have a decent mining rack/construction with decent space between the cards yet (just a regular pc case) I’m running them @ about 580kh/s … I dont want to fry them :D -
Hi Nimmneun. Thanks for the heads up. I’ve just found Sapphire Vapour X 2950 for about £40 more each. They seem to be in stock at Eclipse Computers.
I’m viewing this as a business venture with view to expand rigs if it goes well, so I’m trying not to cut corners. Since Sapphire seem to be the most reputed I’ll be going with them. If not in stock I’ll go for PowerColour

I bought two cards to start with, then a week later later bought two more.
The brand I went with are gigabyte, the only brand I have heard bad reports about is XFX. -
What PSU have you got?
Can anyone recommend me a PSU for this four GPU rig? I have looked for Seasonic 1250 and EVGA Supernova 1300 but can’t find any in stock in the UK.
Man it’s really hard to find all this kit online. I reluctantly have had to order riser cables from Hong Kong. Hopefully that wont delay my setup too much.
Seasonic 1250 is what to go for, yeah getting all the kit at the moment will be hard because everyone else on the planet is doing exactly the same thing, a 4 card rig can make over a 100 euros a day at the moment.
