Hello gang! :)
This is the first post on my journey to better understanding Feathercoin and cryptocurrencies in general.I’m attracted to Bitcoin mining, but only got of to a laughable start with my mediocre video card. Then I started reading about ASIC miners. The pre-orders for super fast money machines seem enticing, but still, it seems to me that the whole idea behind mining is getting lost. Wasn’t the idea that everybody should be able to take part in supporting the currency?
I like the fact that Feathercoin (at least so far) is free of ASIC’s and I would be able to put money into some hardware that actually can do more than just mine coins. Also, the whole background of dedicated people working together to create this currency appeals to me.
So I’m here to get to know more about this whole thing :)
My first questions are, what is the recommendation on GPU’s nowadays? Should I just focus on an AMD card with as high a clock frequency as possible? Should I focus on getting as much RAM on the videocard as possible? Should I go for a dual GPU card such as the HD 7990? It didn’t get too good reviews for gaming considering the price and power consumption, but maybe it’s good for Feathercoin mining?
Do I need to build a dedicated mining rig to be able to get anywhere, or am I joining the game early enough to get somewhere with just a single GPU or two?
Thanks in advance for any help :)

Welcome! Nice intro.
You are still early enough to just go and mine some coins with 1-2 gpu’s :).
At http://www.feathercoin.com/calc/ you can calculate how much coins you will get per day.
Here you can check how much hashes your gpu will do (average).
Most people are using 7950 (i believe).I am currently building 2 rigs with friends full with 6970 and 6990 cards :).

Thank you for the welcome and the pointers, sheepson :)
I’ll look through all the options and see what fits my wallet.Do you have a thread where you describe how you build your rigs? If so, I’d like to read it :)
Or maybe you could give me the highlights here?
So far I only know that I should focus on getting a fast AMD video card with lots of fast RAM… maybe there are other things to consider? Maybe a nice motherboard that can fit more cards than most? :) -
You should check out the mining section of the forum:
http://forum.feathercoin.com/index.php/board,2.0.htmlThere are some topics with pictures and descriptions.
I am in the ‘building phase’ of my rig(s), currently there is only one rig with 3x 6970 running 480 khash each undervolted.
I will post some pictures of the progress soon :). -
Alright, thanks!
Can you tell me why you are undervolting them? Does it give you a higher power/hashing efficiency?Well, maybe that question will be answered as soon as I start reading in the mining section.
I’m looking forward to seeing some pictures. Thanks for taking the time :)

Mining is “super interesting” there is a lot to learn, Cards, mining software, pools etc. It took me a few weeks to start digesting it. You won’t be able to just ask a few questions, it needs more research. There are lots of guides and videos you can read first.
I set my first rig using any old card, then bought a cheap (£40 Radeon 6770 )AMD card (130 KHash/s), to experiment further, first.
Extreme intellectual stimulation tho’. + the pain when your rig blows up!

I actually have been reading like crazy for a couple of weeks now and it is all sinking in. I am at the point where I feel ready to get cracking :)While we’re talking about digesting it all, I’m starting to realise, that sharing the interest with other people (outside teh internetz) is probably not a good idéa, is it? :P
I mean, everybody just breaks out in “you can’t get free money”, “this is a pyramid scheme”, “what if you are unknowingly lending processing power to the mafia” and so on… It’s just too much for most people to take in. I had a talk with a friend about this, who happens to be a banker… bad idéa! ;)I guess I’m not the only one experiencing this kind of thing?

Ugh, yup, I have been seeing some sad posts from people about that kind of stuff happening. I’ll try to stay mentally prepared for this!
