Kevlar - thanks for your awesome contributions and providing this innovation (just sent 10 FTCs ;) ). While reading this thread some questions came to my mind and maybe you can help me understanding a bit more about it (hope it’s not too stupid to get them answered and maybe they were answered already and I did not see it)? It’s mentioned that adding files to link consumes FTC’s - they are “virtually” taken out of the system by sending it to an FTC address with an unknown private key.

How did someone generate an FTC-address without knowing the private key?

How is it ensured that no one gets access to that FTC’s?
By removing FTC’s from the system and having a deflation … let’s predict a successful future for LINK meaning an increased sharing of information…

What happens if Link starts consuming too much FTC’s? It could concur with FTC as a currency to be available for trading other goods (although LINK and sharing information is a good too)?

Is it maybe planned to reactivate the virtually consumed FTC’s
And now - I’m outing myself … how do I create a magnet link? Did a short google but it’s mainly connected with torrent and clients where I have to add the file and could get the link for it - but is this the recommended way?
About the blockchain … I already saw e.g. an embedded Linux distribution - assuming some hundred MB in size? If this data is really stored in the blockchain … does this mean I’m downloading this data with my FTC-Client? And if so - isn’t this a way to dramatically increase the disk space usage?
Sorry for that many questions … hopefully I’m not the only one asking this.
Sorry for quoting it again… maybe it got lost with all the other answers. Can someone please help with the basics by giving me a hint on my questions? Shall I ask it in another thread or is there an easy way to figure it out myself.
Thanks for your help.

Only the magnet link to it is stored in link. The file is received through the bittorrent protocol.

The public key is encoded Link data. It’s not derived from a private key. Therefore, the private key is unknown, and can’t be found without a brute for search of the entire key space. Usually you derive a public key from a private one, but in this case, it’s the public key for some unknown private key.

How is it ensured that no one gets access to that FTC’s?

Because I can’t find that private key without search ALL the possible private keys.
Define ‘too much’. In deflationary economics, the price of a currency rises when the supply drops. The value will inflate to match the supply in accordance with the laws of supply and demand.

Is it maybe planned to reactivate the virtually consumed FTC’s
Assuming this were somehow possible, which it isn’t, this would make for terrible economic policy, and isn’t worth considering.

so, soon dogecoin and catcoin will also be able to use link, all the while, feathercoin is getting zero publicity, i am shocked at how this is being handled, it should be shouted from the rooftops but at the moment it feels like a horse trapped in the starting gate.
poor form guys.

I don’t know what to look for, maybe, but I don’t see anyone using the Link now. More work on it to be done?
Every coin will be able to use the Link was my understanding from the beginning.
It just seems to me to be a slow starter as far as use is concerned. Maybe I am not considering all the possibilities.
fkimbe -
It would be nice to have Link added to the top of the Feathercoin page as a function for everyone.
Unless it is not in the best interest of Feathercoin??? Anyone?
Hmmm… I have mixed feelings about that.
The entire point of Link was to start the conversation about publishing in the Blockchain. That conversation has begun, and it may have gone like this: “Holy crap, 0.92 FTC just to publish one link? No friggin way!” and as far as I’m concerned that’s perfectly valid. The level of adoption may well not justify a price point at that level, meaning that the usefullness is severely limited, making any publicity potentially negative.
People have voted for Dogecoin adoption because of the price point, not because of some ideological this coin vs. that coin war. If Feathercoin is to become popular as a publishing venue for Link, either the adoption must increase to justify the price, or the price must come down. Either way, both of those decisions are in the hands of EVERYONE HERE, and NOT ME. I officially wash my hands of the decision making process regarding Link’s direction, and leave it in the stewardship of this community to decide on these critical issues.
The community has spoken, they want a streaming API, and they want Dogecoin support, and they’ll get it… potentially this weekend if all goes as planned.
If they decide to speak up again, and lower mining fees for Feathercoin, more power to them. And if they decide to use this as a tool for promoting Feathercoin, I’d be overjoyed… but I can’t expect them to if the utility isn’t there.

That conversation has begun, and it may have gone like this: “Holy crap, 0.92 FTC just to publish one link? No friggin way!”
I don’t really feel it has begun though, its like asking 10 people or 1000 people what they think of the price point to publish, and just for example lets say 30% of those people think it is fair, those 30% will then go and tell their like minded friends and colleagues, so you could have 3 or 300 people promoting link and subsequently feathercoin. And not forgetting those other 700 who didn’t think it was fair but will still mention it to people who might.
surely that’s how marketing works, not everyone will buy a product but more people knowing about it will mean more people buying it, and as result of that, some of those 700 who didn’t think the price was fair, now do. Its funny how psychology works.
@Kevlar - thanks a lot for all the clarifying answers. Helped me a lot to understand it better.
Let me shortly recap my understanding:
Link stores a kind of metadata like the magnet link and e.g. some search description and labels in the blockchain, but not the file itself (it’s stored in the torrent network). This means - link provides me e.g. a search service for torrent files (like at the moment). I assume this is just an example how to use link (as torrent file search services should exist already)?
The real value - mentioned with storing non destroyable data - is storing metadata or other lightweight information, that cannot be destroyed - right (as all the other data is in a torrent network and could be destroyed in there)?
Regarding the deflation … it’s just another kind of deflation like e.g. lost FTC’s due to a hard drive crash and lost private keys.
Yep. And fwiw the donor paid FTC for the adoption.
I’ve used Link more than anyone outside Kevlar (most likely – let’s check the blockchain!) and that’s probably the reason I see things differently than those voicing opposition to a blockchain agnostic free market approach. There also was no opposition to the blockchain agnostic approach when it was announced prior to Link even becoming a reality.
And another reality is, this is Kevlar’s baby and he’s welcome to do with it what he likes. He asked for suggestions and he read them and he acted upon them and the free market spoke and now … this.
So, if anyone should be disappointed here it should be those that welcome free markets, open solutions and put their cryptocoin where their keyboard is and backed this project in the direction they want it to go. It’s not cool to put Kevlar in a position where he feels anything but joy for doing this for humanity. No one else did, he did. So chill out, please. Your precious coin will be just fine and you’ll still be able to spend all the FTC on Link as you want.
Dogecoin and Catcoin have no idea about Link outside a few people I’m sure. Instead of complaining in this thread about “lack of promotion” for [s]a blockchain agnostic app[/s] FTC, why not go promote it? It’s not going away, so go use it. Go donate to the project and guide it in the direction you want. It will be a good while before those coins promote Link I’m sure.
I just want to use Link and the cheapest method for me is DogeCoin. You’re more than welcome to use Feathercoin and always will be.
One CPU, one vote … and a few FTC.
