Guide: Free hashing power.
-
Recently completed a visual step by step guide at getting a month free hashing power to mine altcoins. Right now it’s a set up to mine Quarkcoin which can easily be converted to your coin of choice.
85 - 100 KHs on average for a month.
Check it out on my blog: iBitcoinBlogIf anyone knows of alternative methods to mine different altcoins by using cloud servers, please let me know!
Enjoy and happy hashing! -
Looks good, thanks for the guide. What happens after one month of the free-$10-code? Do you have to upgrade and pay or can you get another free contract?
-
That may work out viable method of mining starter coins, how much does it cost legit?.
Also, It will be interesting to see how quickly this paper brings down “Simple hosting” …
-
P.S. is CEX.IO not doin Feathercoin yet?
-
I decided to pay for a month on Digital Ocean as it seems pretty cool at that price. Maybe, See how many PCX I get.
I would always download cpuminer from the GitHub. I’ll post instructions to mine Feathercoins, with cpuminer from source.
-
Here’s some instructions for anyone who wants to try it.
My advice is Do not download the file mentioned, until more details are confirmed, Sorry. It is not official Feathercoin or Github.
This is the - New members area, so they can introduce themselves and get directed if lost.
This announcement should be on the main forum, Off Topic or Mining - where it can be assessed as an obvious potential safety risk, without Rep.
These instructions replace the Quark coin miner and include securing your root. This needs improving ( 4Rep+?) to a Feathercoin [Guide], even if it is unprofitable, it looks like a good learning exercise.

With DigitalOcean you can get some of the cheapest monthly cloud hosting available. Did I mention you can even get $10.00 free to start with? Here’s a step by step guide to begin mining Quark Coin and begin converting it to Bitcoin. What you will need:
Paypal account or valid credit card.
Internet connection.
Quarkcoin wallet address.
$10 Promo code: 2014SSD
pool of your choice
Steps:
Visit Digital Ocean and create an account.
Once logged in, click on Get Started.

P.S. is CEX.IO not doin Feathercoin yet?
AFAIK, their machines are mining SHA coins only, or not? But since they added other currencies as option to exchange them to BTC or mining power, it would be sexy to have an option to “invest” FTC in mining and have an option to withdraw FTC back after you’re done. Maybe we should try to reach them?
CEX.IO provides also Litecoin mining so it can’t be only SHA256 but also Scrypt hardware.

I’m very skeptical of the 100KH/s number. The screen shot shows 8 threads, each running at just over 10 KH/sec which adds up to less than 85 KH/s. This is quite a good amount for CPU mining, but you won’t get that on a single CPU core.
I’m a heavy user of Digital Ocean, but to get 8 CPU cores, you need to get the $160/month droplet, not the $10/month one which only has a single core.
@wrapper: your 10KH/s seems reasonable for a single core.
-
If you’re just doing a test run, or just testing in general with the $10 free promo, simply get the 8 cores at $0.238 per hour. You can easily get almost 8.4 hours of mining at 600 KHs +.
You can always use a gift card that’s empty for verification purposes.

I want to feel you’re straight but - Isn’t this is the 5th time you posted in Newbies area?
Also, that’s not what it said in the guide …
-
Because the guide was a basic summation, I didn’t go into detail of how to create multiple droplets etc. it’s for learning purposes. I spend most of my time on my blog, not on forums. I do not have to share any of my experiences with anyone if this is the harassment I am going to get for trying to contribute to a community and simply give users a different approach to mining when they cannot afford to do so.
So what do you need wrapper? My name, my phone number, my place of employment and my facebook profile? I am not looking to be felt as “straight” in your eyes, I am simply educating people. What do people do when they’re new and uneducated, they come to the newbie area looking for help and guidance. So yes I posted in uh, the newbies area. Forgive me as I didn’t know I was obligated to post elsewhere. If I knew where to post an offtopic newbie informational guide, I would have posted it elsewhere.
Not to mention you removed one number from my link to my blog to show page now found, then further more posted your own DigitalOcean referral link in my post later on. Talk about shady, and nothing but pure greed on your behalf. This is not something that should be done in this community regardless. Especially someone that is “Staff.”
-
You should understand, as Staff , even though that is voluntary, I do feel a duty to protect new members. I did not delete the post and was awaiting your reply.
Can you read the forum rules before posting again? I will do so again as well…

Protecting the members from what exactly, an investment blog?
You can find similar posts to this on Bitcointalk and various other forums, all I did was simply add a visual guide to it all.
I have read the rules.
“We also want this to be a place where community can develop and we can have mature conversations and discussions, as well as having some fun along the way. To achieve this, we strive to maintain an atmosphere that can be enjoyed by all and we ask all members of the community to be respectful at all times. This means please use etiquette and politeness. Treat people with kindness, gentleness and respect. If you do this, the rest of the code of conduct won’t need more than a cursory mention.”
Changing peoples posts and basically assuming they’re doing harm by posting a blog, not so much a friendly environment. Especially after you basically call them untrustworthy for being a new member here.
“Users agree not to post anything abusive, rude, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening or sexually explicit.”
You slandered my be saying saying not to download PuTTY, when in fact it is a secure program and reputable for installing on Ubuntu servers and mentioned in many Bitcointalk forum posts. By saying you don’t trust me, or as you so put it “straight.” Then attacked me for posting in a newbie area. I have less than 15 posts on this forum, I consider that to be newbie in its entirety.
“You are allowed to have links to personal sites in your signature and in your profile, and may post them in threads on occasion (just not often, please) as long as the content of the site linked does not include material that violates this code of conduct and if you are not posting any other form of advertising.”
I posted a link to my blog, my personal website. You altered this link regardless of being fit in the guidelines and permissible. I was not advertising any other services, I was educating people on ways to mine without the costly overhead of equipment. I write about investing. Furthermore, you directly posted your Digital Ocean referral link on my thread, when you intentionally altered my original post because of it. Is this not direct advertising?
"Editing of posts: When a post breaks guidelines and requires editing in order to bring it back under compliance with this Code of Conduct, the moderator should generally copy the un-edited post to the Moderator’s Area first. Only after the original post is preserved as evidence should the original post be edited. "
Did you post the unedited version in the Moderators area before editing my initial post?

Um. Okay, here goes.
I have unlimited access to empty prepaid cards. That’s not an exaggeration, I don’t want to explain how that’s the case, I simply do.
When you set up one of these massive instances, though, even before you use the entirety of your $10 credit, DigitalOcean will contact the email account associated with it and go “excuse meh wtf r u doin” and then ask for some verification info against the card. Once they even called me.
Here’s my take, though. You’re essentially playing whack-a-mole wherein you’re the mole. Ethically, I’d have no beef doing this to, say, Microsoft or Oracle or any other number of the Fortune 500 companies that want to bleed some money out of people by dipping their toes into a market in order to make competition suffer through underpricing of services… but I mean, this is DigitalOcean. They’ve got a lot of horsepower, but they’re not some massive machine to rage against, they’re pretty much end users like you and I. They’ve built a great service and they reluctantly agree to people using their equipment in this manner if only because they don’t believe in being tyrants.
I just don’t feel like taking advantage of a credit program they intend for you to use once. “I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.” and all that.
As you were, though.

Since many people view this forum by looking at Unread Posts the categories lose their meaning and I believe the need to maintain order is not as important as helping new people gain better understanding.
As staff we are here to give others everything they need to do their jobs, fulfil their roles and help one another. By relentlessly enforcing rules we create more work for ourselves and forget the spirit the rules in the first place, guides that help us reach our goals.
So I don’t have a problem with this post being here.
-
That’s the main reason why I limited the entirety to the $10 promo. If a user prefers to continue buying into it, that is their choice. Many users spend hundreds on ebay to rent hashing power for no return on their investment at all other than a few mBTC. This is basically the same concept but the users have the ability to control the minimal power.
Users can do the same concept here. I didn’t post the guide to abuse it, I posted it to simply educate people on alternatives rather than buying expensive equipment. Which is why I left out the fact of using giftcards as I don’t want users to abuse their service, but still be able to take advantage of the $10 promotion they are offering.

As Chrisj is now guaranteeing the download is trojan free, I have replaced the link. At no stage was the post removed.

Hi guys,
I applaud the desire to help out, although the best place would have been in the Support >> Guides area ;)
However, I do have issues with the accuracy of the numbers, as I pointed out. I still do not believe, based on my experience of DigitalOcean droplets, that even the largest one would generate 600KH/s.
However, I will test it tomorrow and report back. If I am wrong I will of course apologise, but if I am right, can we work on a correct guide to go in the Guides board?
Regards,
Stefan -
Use the promo and create a droplet on the 16 GB / 8 CPUS. Run 8 threads. Each one will be between 80 - 100 KH/s each.
-
I’ve tested the procedure as provided by ibitcoinblog using my own Digital Ocean account rather than the freebie code, with the single difference being that I chose to mine a Scrypt coin rather than Quark Coin.
His procedures are correct and do work as stated, and the only comment I have on the technical accuracy of the guide is that sudo is not required in all the commands because Digital Ocean droplets are created with only the root user by default.
Seen as purely a tutorial on setting up CPU mining on a Linux VPS, it works absolutely.
However:
The hashrates quoted do not apply to Scrypt coins, including Feathercoin.
The largest droplet available from Digital Ocean is 16GB RAM and 8 CPU cores, which I used.

root@Mine-Test:~/cpuminer#
On a node costing approximately $5.16 per day to run, it would earn approximately $0.29 in FTC if FTC is mined directly. This means it is absolutely uneconomic to use this method to mine if not losing handfuls of money is an objective.
I understand that with $10 of free VPS use, you may able to mine around 1.6 FTC without it costing anything, and as a learning experience it may be worth more to some. However, creating multiple accounts to make use of the same freebie code is almost certainly against DO’s terms and conditions, and absolutely against the spirit of the service they offer, and should not be condoned.
Digital Ocean is a solid, reliable and fair VPS provider, and abusing their offers in this manner risks the service they provide to other users.
Having said that, I’m happy to have the guide added to the Support >> Guides forums, as it is technically correct, as long as the hashrates are adjusted for Scrypt values given that this is an FTC forum.
