This sheds a lot of light on the subject and how to fix it:

Note: if you happen to have a 7970 Vapor-X, this thread and my appended post is an easier fix:

Thanks, I hope it does too - I know it was very frustrating for me.

I’ve even seen people sell of their cards because they though they got a dud.

Thats a lot to read thru! I’m getting around 740Mh/s on my 280X Toxics, so when I have time I’ll read thru it and see what it says and maybe have a little play, I should be getting another toxic this week to start on another rig, so my have a look into the voltage unlocking thing before I put it into full production!

Theres just so many things that need time to be looked at, and just not enough time to look at them all.

Well I’ll summarize it for you - or try to. Most 7900/280x cards have a BIOS that will prevent you getting your max hashrate. You’ll top out around 200 KH/s from the max which leads most people to believe that they need to overclock or find the magic ratio (0.57). In the beginning that’s why a lot of people were flashing to different BIOS to fix the issue. What Stilt (widely regarded) does is modify your BIOS free of charge so that you can ultimately 1) reach the hashrate your cards are designed to at stock clocks (usually 200 KH/s more) and 2) enable you to overclock for an even higher hashrate, as the card won’t incorrectly adjust things. It’s also believed that the 290 series cards suffer from the same bad BIOS, but it’s much more difficult to fix according to Stilt.

Not likely, but there are people like SAPPHIRE trying to fix it on their end now.

No sorry, not got round to doing anything about it yet… I’m expecting a couple more cards this week so when the rig gets shut down again to do the upgrade I will spend a couple of hours playing with BIOS.
