Over the last few months we have been discussing, coding and testing a major update to the Feathercoin protocol. The rise of multipools, ASICs and confirmation times have highlighted issues which we, and other coins have been closely investigating.

That work has now resulted in the imminent release of Feathercoin version 0.8.6.1. Although a point release it includes fundamental changes to aspects of the protocol settings and an enhanced hash rate compensation algorithm to restore mining fairness from coin hoppers.

The Devs are (and should) be concentrating on the release, but, there is important works to publicise eHRC and the block time changes.

In this case all miners, merchants, exchanges and wallets will need to upgrade. It is a very unusual and pioneering change for a bigger coin, so will need a lot of support.

      1. Block times.

The Feathercoin Transaction block time will be reduced from 2.5 minutes to 1 minute. The miner block payment will reduce to 80 FTC to compensate for the increased frequency but maintain the same coin supply…

      2. eHRC or enhanced Hash Rate Compensation,

eHRC uses the standard Bitcoin protocol to calculate the the next block difficulty, but adds 2 extra historical block lookups, or block average times to calculate the new difficulty more accurately. The difficulty ReTarget has been increased to every block.

      Catch up on some details.

The new client is available and the fork will take place at April 24th, if blocks are produced as planned.
