[Solved] Yosemite ; Chrome "Security error" on Feathercoin Mac Download page!
-
Hello Knowledgeable Feathercoiners,
i’m moving to a Yosemite Mac system soon. Questions regarding that:
(1) i’m currently running Feathercoin-QT v0.8.7.0-beta-qr . Will that version work on Yosemite v. 10.10.2 ?
(2) I saw there is an upgrade of Feathercoin-QT; v. 0.8.7.1 . HOWEVER, when I go to the Download page for that in Chrome browser, specifically to the page https://www.feathercoin.com/dl/feathercoin-mac-0.8.7.1.dmg in Chrome, a big nasty “Security Error” page comes up. Please see attached Image for the text of that, the blurred part being “www.feathercoin.com”. Do I ignore that big nasty warning and Download anyway?? By the way, that Warning is definitely *BAD* for the health of Feathercoin, so I’d recommend contacting Google of how to get it remedied if you don’t know the reason why it’s there…
(3) IF it is okay to ignore that big bad red warning from Chrome (Why is it there??), What is The Correct Procedure for upgrading to 0.8.7.1 since I already have v. 0.8.7.0?
(4) Please do let us know what Security Error is about so we can know whether or not that Mac Feather-QT Download is safe.
Thanks for your help and I hope you can get that Google/Chrome Security Error business resolved.

I am assuming the “Security error” is the fault of Google in some way but I will wait to hear back from you on that. In any case it definitely needs remedying since it is pushing people away even if it is incorrect.

Hi HiW
I have never seen the warning you are getting on my Mac with Yosemite and Chrome. But let me have a look again tonight when I get back from work and report my findings, you are right this does need to be resolved.

I’m hoping it’s a false positive. But it needs checking out.

Thanks for the replies. Based on what I saw googling the issue I would guess false positive but I don’t know and will wait to find out from you before downloading the latest version. I am getting that Warning on Chrome Version 41.0.2272.104 on a Snow Leopard system.
For some reason I didn’t get email notifications about the replies to this thread. Is there an option for that? I just now clicked “Follow this topic” as it wasn’t checked before.
Also these questions still:
(1) i’m currently running Feathercoin-QT v0.8.7.0-beta-qr . Will that version work on Yosemite v. 10.10.2 ?
(3) IF it is okay to ignore that big bad red warning from Chrome, What is The Correct Procedure for upgrading to 0.8.7.1 since I already have v. 0.8.7.0?

FYI more info: it is also giving this bad Warning on Chrome on Yosemite. It doesn’t show it on Safari or Firefox, however I am waiting to hear back from you before downloading, as well as instructions on how to replace my previous version while keeping my wallet intact. Thank you.

If we scan that URL using virus total, only one site out of sixty two has the file flagged. Full statistics here. That could well be a false positive due to the nature of crypto software.
Interestingly, “google safe browsing” has that file listed as clean. I’ll get someone with our google access to have google scan us again and hopefully the chrome message will go.
I think it would be a good idea for the compiler to provide checksums too. It’s something I’ll consider for the new website.
Re: your wallet. Make sure you have a backup of your wallet.dat, and install over the top should be fine. If it all goes wrong, you can reimport your wallet.dat, so it’s well worth taking a copy before doing anything like this.

Hi - thanks. I’m still seeing the same behavior: Chrome giving a big red warning; Firefox dealing with it just fine.
It would be good if there was some way for that incorrect warning to get removed since it will surely push people away.
So it sounds like it is totally fine to download from Chrome, and the red warning is incorrect and can be safely ignored?

Yeah just ignore it. Its safe. If your worried your welcome to get the source and compile yourself. But I don’t think its worth it.
I download it via chrome saw the warning ignored it. And its working fine :) antivirus has not picked anything up. -
Hi - thank you. I did manage to get it downloaded but only after a bunch of extra effort. Firefox blocked it from downloading, Chrome blocked it from downloading (after I managed to figure out how to navigate past the big red warning), and third attempt: Safari did download it, however then I had to figure out how to get it to open as Apple Yosemite doesn’t allow regular opens of apps from “unidentified developers.” All in all, such difficult downloads - fraught with warnings of malicious content all along the way - does not bode well for the future of Feathercoin. Regular Joe Smith would likely run off to another cryptocurrency at the first red flag of it having malicious content and not investigate as I have since I’m already invested. Chrome and Firefox blocked its download completely with warnings. If Feathercoin is to have growth in its future perhaps there are ways the Feathercoin organization can help downloads on common browsers to be easy and not riddled with malicious content warnings on a common Mac Yosemite system. At the very least, perhaps there should be advisement on the main download site of how to deal with the “unidentified developer” issue on Mac systems. The solution to that is that once it’s downloaded to press Control and Open for the app. (Mac Help has full details on the part in its entry “Open an app from an unidentified developer.”)
The number of difficulties, blocks, and malicious content warnings I encountered in various browsers trying to download the Feathercoin app looks like a rather serious issue if Feathercoin is to grow. Let me know if I can be of further assistance and thank you for your correspondence.

Cheers for the help, with this support issue. As you know our main effort is the Core Development and the forum, which some staff are very busy concentrating on. The issue of compiled versions and downloads has been looked at and considered, and I agree there are still issues and not many options.
We’re still looking for more “help” to spread the load, PM me if you wish to be put forward for some FTC moderator rights and team discussions …
