[Solved] Virus in Mining Executable - false warning AVG
-
Hi all.
I downloaded a mining program for Feathercoin:
pooler-cpuminer-2.2.3-win32.zip â€" Binary for 32-bit Windows, version 2.2.3
from https://github.com/pooler/cpuminer/downloads
and my virus checker gave this virus warning:
AVG states “Trojan horse Downloader.Agent2.BHTO” in the file minerd.exe.
If this program is infected, are any other trusted and recommended mining programs suggested?

It’s fine.

I just sent the file to VirusTotal. It would seem to me that the CoinMiner Trojan uses cpuminer as its code giving all the false positives.

guy named ripple comes to forum to talk about virus in competing currency.
seems legit.
Turns out it was, but it wasn’t related to Feathercoin specifically, and it was a false alarm fortunately.

The reason these false positives occur is due to botnets, so anti virus programs add legitimate programs like the mining software to the virus list, but its good to double check with us to sure.

Thanks all for your replies.
Pyxis, this appears a very likely explanation, though I may seek out the SHA2 hash checksum for safety.
I have found that the source code for Cpuminer is also available, which I understand makes the program fully transparent and therefore verifiable by the Feathercoin community.
Of course I’ll let you know if my system inexplicably starts mining by itself!

Hi guys,
Just downloaded the ScrypMiner windows miner as indicated in the “Startup Mining Guide”, and my antivirus labeled it as a virus. This is what it looks like at VirusTotal:
Link to the startup mining guide: https://forum.feathercoin.com/index.php?/topic/414-guide-feathercoin-start-mining/
Link to ScryptMiner GUI: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=62414.0
Is it safe? Should I download a different miner?
Thanks!
