I just came across this great cool post while digging through the archives. Nice work.

The only lasting effect is that it happened at all. Whenever altercoins come up in /r/Bitcoin on reddit our 51% attack always seems to get brought up.

Interesting stuff, we had not seen any attacks for a small while before the last hard fork and I found this a bit worrying. I want to know that we are worth attacking :)

It’s a valid question, but the answer is simply that all that does is obscure the trail, it doesn’t actually eliminate the taint. I agree that a shared wallet does introduce reasonable doubt that should be sufficient to poke holes in any forensic analysis, but it does still require a third party. Zerocoin eliminates both the taint entirely, and the third party.

At 04:00 am 27th August 2013 - the Feathercoin Difficulty changed from 197 to 137.

I’ve updated the chart up to 21:00 am 27th August 2013. I’ve added a simpler chart showing hourly production against Difficulty.

The Purple Line should be at 100%. During the 193 Difficulty it was < 50 %, at 137 there has been a Hash rate increase and it is averaging over 200% the correect roduction rate.

The Green Feathercoin production line should be along the Blue line, the specified production the difficulty change is trying to enforce.

The Yellow is the Difficulty.

Is it possible to buy up all the domain names that sound similar to feathercoin.com? I know it’s probably an expensive proposal, but it will keep the jackasses away and add to credibility.

I selected an interesting Feathercoin event to do a more in depth Block production short term analysis.

On Saturday 8th June 2013 the daily charts showed a big spike in Block production when the difficulty decreased after being high for a long period.

This chart zooms into the variation per Hour. The chart shows the extent of the increase in Hash rate at the peak 20:00 Saturday. The length of the initial peak and the time before the real network was allowed back.

I’ve done the chart without any pre-conceived ideas, and will be interested to look up what the forum said was happening at the time.

I haven’t looked in detail but I suspect the real attack happened just before the end, and they managed to add their own blockchain by back dating the blocks. I seem to remember at the time I had my real coins, then they were orphaned and disappeared from my wallet.

This chart covering enough of the event so it is interesting to look at now, so i’ve uploaded it.

I’m going to add a few more hours and update it later to see if there are any “after effects”.

I’ll do another “Hour analysis” if anyone’s got another event needs a closer look at, but it’s a lot of work, manually.

However, I think it could be a good chart to show live on the forum, I think the chart shows community action helped us deflect a problem.

Also, been looking at a couple of block analysis tools for Bitcoin on Github which could be ported to Feathercoin, I was wondering if anyone’s already “doing that”?

Its fixed now. Shame we haven’t a contact if it happens again, cryptocoinexplorer is used on p2pool to show (FTC) shares payouts.

The original concept was that you could easily adjust the weighting dependant on the problem you are trying to solve. In Feathercoins case, the 44% restriction has helped damp the short term variation, but is deficient over 2 weeks. If you want to emphasis short term changes, Av = ( 2 * 100 + 1000 + 10000 ) /4.

I would rather just stick with looking into Feathercoin, as the none scrypt nature makes the other coins situation to Hash attacks different to Feathercoins, we are slightly more secure. Have they really implemented my idea?

P.S. I’ve updated the charts to show the Day, Week and Monthly trends, as they are developing up to August 11th 2013. The red line on weekly is Sunday. Red on Monthly is the start of the month.

PPC generates about 20% PoW and 80% PoS blocks now. They are into real problems which can lead to market collapse. PoS is killing PPC basically.

We retarget every 504 blocks, but look back 21 hour for difficulty calculations. 504 blocks = 21 hour in theory, but it’s different in reality. That’s why I suggest to retarget faster while keeping 21 hour retarget window.

First 80-90% of the “opportunist” miner don’t care of ALT coins, they hash them for profit as it’s more profitable then mining BTC

In fact this is like working on the most profitable task, and selling immediately reduce your risk of working for less profit as you don’t need to weight the coin future value. so they convert to BTC/LTC or even fiat. this include the middlecoin pool that trade in quasi real time the mine coins for BTC

some “opportunist” are semi-keeper: they use crypto switcher, multipoll.in, switch by hand. They will just switch and possibly make some market analysis to higher their profit, but often if you get high on coinchoose: your price is relatively high so sell fast is a lesser gamble. but usually they are not keeper for long time. so on this week-end most should have dump

some “opportunist” keeper: but would mine chosen coin with more stable/predictable price and choose lower diff then average to mine and get more coins(should not be in this equation for this week-end in FTC). they keep them in hope of future value increase

with BTC diff very high the “opportunist” are 6-7Gh/s from the 2Gh/s 2 month ago.

you have also 2 other types that are the strategic and the believer:
strategic: evaluate coins and mine the one they think should be suitable and would give over the long run profit, so would mine unless they revaluate the coin (seems we got some of those for 500k-1Gh/s in the last month that is pretty good). for them diff is not really in the equation unless it get out of control and make it less appealing even for long term like it was in mid-May.

the “believer” are another story that are the one that mine because it is FTC(difficult to measure but should be around at least 500K as mid-May high diff showed).

Ghostlander, Here’s a chart of the blocks per day against difficulty. I’ve zoomed in on the last 51 days.

I think we’re (Feathercoin) in a new, bleeding edge situation, the cusp of wide acceptance. So what has happened in the past may not be the best guide to what is going to happen. For instance, I’ve now noticed a significant weekend hash swing that explains some of the hash rate variability, I’ve also experienced and seen the effect of other high Hash miners moving from Feathercoin to support other coins.

Also, I can’t become a developer, in the long run, I would just like to run my mining just at night, during “Economy 7” (UK night electricity rate), to support the Feathercoin network, as a cause of Hash rate swings. We can then decide optimum block average times for difficulty adjustment to the actual conditions of the network, not the usual guess…

I am trying to find if anyone can easily tell me what to do having identified a serious bug in the Block Chain Explorer? Mainly to help anyone else with the same problem. If I had succeeded it would also have been fixed by now.
